Standing up to China

We must stand shoulder to shoulder with our Asia-Pacific allies, many of whom feel very threatened by China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea. The U.S. must work with regional allies to increase our military presence in the region and guarantee freedom of navigation and access to trade routes that pass through the Western Pacific. We must support Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Korea in defending their territorial waters. The U.S. military must look to station additional Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps units in the Western Pacific. The presence of our armed forces, coupled with the fact that they will participate in joint operation training exercises with our regional allies, will serve as a major deterrent to Chinese expansionist behavior and show our allies that we will stand with them.

The U.S. must then lead in building robust economic relationships in the region, promote institution building in Asia, and encourage China to be a responsible stakeholder in all of this. This would include the arenas of cyberspace freedom, human rights, trade, territorial disputes, and climate change. If we are able to navigate the current tenuousness between our great nations I am very optimistic that the 21st century U.S.-China relationship has the potential to lead the world into a new era of peace and stability!

When elected to Congress I will:

  • Reassure our Asia-Pacific allies that we will stand with them.
  • Work to increase regional military presence, and to ensure freedom of navigation in the South China Sea.
  • Hold China accountable whenever they break with international agreements.
  • Work to overcome this tenuous stage in our relationship, and to forge a partnership that can lead the world into a new era of peace and stability.
